Less Translating Yourself, More of the Actual Work
You shouldn't have to educate your doctor before you can be understood as a patient.
Plenty of good clinicians will respect your culture. That's the floor, and you should expect it everywhere.
What's harder to find is a psychiatrist who's South Asian.
I take your identity as settled, and stay curious about everything around it.
We look at your biology, family history, and the social and cultural systems you move through.
We may share some parts of our stories, but I never take it for granted. Each patient who walks into my clinic is special and unique in their own way.
I see patients in person in Manhattan, at Union Square and on the Upper West Side.

What Feels Different with a South Asian Psychiatrist
Because I'm South Asian does not mean I share your experience; getting to know yours is the whole point.
At my clinic, you get real time to tell your story before we decide on anything. I formulate out loud, so you always know what I'm thinking and why.
Family can be a real intervention — and involving them is your call, on your terms. Two things can be true: parents want to help, and your privacy still holds.
At my clinic, you can start where the problems lie, without having to explain the basics of your life.
If you're curious, let's talk
Leave a number and a little of your story — I'll reach out, and we can start with a real conversation instead of a rushed intake.
Not for emergencies: call 911, or call or text 988.
What I Sit With
These are life situations we sit with together — not labels to pin on you.
What your family expects of you
Worrying who will find out
Growing up between cultures
Coming out and family strain
Being the only one in the room
The one everyone thinks is fine
Nervous about medication
First in your family to see a psychiatrist
We start with your story, not your explanations
You don't have to explain where you're from before we can talk about how you're doing.
If you're curious, let's start with a conversation.
Who You Are Across Cultures
I grew up across India, Bahrain, and the United States. Moving between cultures taught me to observe, and it took me time to come to terms with who I am in this world.
None of that tells me your story. South Asian can mean many countries, languages, faiths, and generations. Representation is the first step, and then the process of getting to know you begins.
Where I come from, when someone is struggling, the village rallies. I try to practice that way. A family can be your biggest support and the hardest part of your week.
The systems you live in shape how you function — your self-esteem, your relationships, whether you ever feel settled. Therapy and medication live in one relationship here: the person adjusting a prescription is the same person who knows your story.
Questions People Ask Before We Begin
Tell Me What's Going On — In Your Own Words
You don't need a polished summary or the right clinical words — just tell me what's been happening, and what's changed.
We'll make sense of it together, at a pace that fits your life. If you're curious, that's enough to start.
About Dr. Kavin Fatehchand
I'm Dr. Kavin Fatehchand — an MD-PhD psychiatrist in New York. I’m queer, and South Asian.
I'm an MD-PhD. Psychiatry wasn’t always on my mind. But that work taught me to trace and uncover systems of reward, communication, and disease. In my New York clinic I look for similar patterns, but there are no microscopes involved.
I am in private practice because it allows me to track and understand the whole patient sitting across from me. I’m not a checklist that resets each visit. We make sense of your struggles over time, creating a deep relationship.
My prescribing philosophy is less-is-more — I'd rather understand the drivers and peel back than keep adding.
